Our key milestones –
Southampton Chinese School was established across late 1997 through early 1998, at the Mount Pleasant Junior School. The co-founders were Dr. Zhijun Xin, Dr. Jianping Wu, Mr Huijun Zhang, Dr. Ping Hua, and Mrs Winnie Tang. The first headteacher was Dr. Zhijun Xin, followed by Dr. Jianping Wu, and then Mr Huijun Zhang.
南安普敦中文学校于 1997 年底至 1998 年初在芒特普莱森特小学成立。 联合创始人是辛志军博士、吴建平博士、张慧军先生、华萍博士和唐文妮女士。 首任校长是辛志军博士，其次是吴建平博士，然后是张惠军先生。
The school moved to it’s current site, Cantell School, in the Autumn of 2000.

The school was initially supported and funded by the department of the Community Language Services from Southampton City Council. This department provided all teaching material, books for student study, teacher’s trainings, payment for the classroom rental and the teacher’s income. From year 2010, the funding was gradually reduced until the year 2014 or 2015 the funding was completely stopped. In order to carry on school running and teaching the school gradually increasing the tuition fees.

Dr. Pengfei Xue took over the baton from the former headteacher in 2020 and has continued to lead the school with dedication, vision, and a strong commitment to excellence ever since. Under his leadership, the school has navigated unprecedented challenges, embraced innovative teaching methods, and further strengthened its mission of promoting Chinese language education and cultural understanding within the community. Dr. Xue’s guidance has been instrumental in fostering an inspiring, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment for both students and staff.
薛鹏飞博士于2020年接过前任校长的接力棒，自此一直以高度的敬业精神、远见卓识和对卓越教育的坚持领导学校。在他的领导下，学校成功应对了前所未有的挑战，积极采用创新的教学方法，并进一步巩固了在社区内推广中文教育和文化理解的使命。薛博士的引领为学生和教职员工营造了一个充满启发性、包容性和学术严谨性的学习环境，发挥了关键作用。
Toward the end of 2020, Southampton Chinese School, like all schools across the UK, faced significant challenges brought by Covid-19. With the support of our students and their families, the school adapted quickly and smoothly by moving lessons online, ensuring continuity of learning while keeping everyone safe. This transition was highly successful and demonstrated the resilience of our school community.
From 6 November 2021, we were delighted to welcome all students back to the Cantell School campus for in-person Chinese lessons. The health and safety of our community has always been our top priority, and we implemented a range of measures to reduce crowding, maintain social distancing where possible, and minimise the risk of further virus transmission. These precautions remained in place until national Covid restrictions were fully lifted in 2023.
自2020年底以来，南安普顿中文学校与全英国的学校一样，面临着新冠疫情带来的巨大挑战。在学生及家长的支持下，学校迅速而顺利地转为线上授课，既保障了学习的连续性，也确保了大家的安全。这一转变非常成功，充分体现了学校社区的韧性与凝聚力。
自2021年11月6日起，我们欣喜地欢迎所有学生重返 Cantell 学校校园，继续参加面对面的中文课程。学生和社区成员的健康与安全始终是我们的首要任务，因此学校采取了一系列措施，减少人群聚集、在条件允许时保持社交距离，并尽量降低病毒传播的风险。这些防疫措施一直持续到2023年英国全面解除新冠限制为止。
In recent years, Southampton Chinese School has made significant strides in advancing the quality of Chinese language education and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Through the implementation of innovative pedagogical approaches, the expansion of structured cultural programmes, and strategic collaboration with local community partners, the school has enriched students’ linguistic competencies and fostered a deeper appreciation of Chinese heritage. These developments reflect a sustained commitment to academic excellence, cultural literacy, and the cultivation of a supportive and intellectually stimulating learning environment.
近年來，南安普顿中文学校在提升中文教育质量及促进跨文化理解方面取得了显著进展。通过实施创新的教学方法、拓展系统化的文化课程，以及与本地社区的战略性合作，学校不仅提升了学生的语言能力，也加深了他们对中华文化遗产的理解。这些成就体现了学校在学术卓越、文化素养培养及营造支持性与智力启发型学习环境方面的持续承诺。
In November 2025, with coordination from our teacher Sun Li and the China Overseas Chinese Foundation, our school successfully launched a series of customized training courses—our first independent collaboration with a third party. This milestone marks important progress in enhancing teacher training and diversifying our Chinese education programs.
Looking ahead, Southampton Chinese School aims to further enhance its academic excellence and cultural impact, fostering an environment where students can thrive linguistically, creatively, and socially. In the coming years, we plan to expand our curriculum, introduce new cultural initiatives, and strengthen partnerships with local and international communities. By embracing innovation, inclusivity, and lifelong learning, the school aspires to cultivate confident, culturally literate individuals who will serve as ambassadors of Chinese language and heritage, contributing positively to both the local and global community.
